The Dour Queue: How Hifz Focus Automates Long-Term Quran Retention
One of the greatest challenges in Quran memorization is not memorizing the next page—it is holding onto what you memorized last month, last semester, or three years ago.
The Dour Queue in Hifz Focus is an automated, intelligent Spaced Repetition System (SRS) built specifically for the Quran. It prevents older verses from slipping away by automatically scheduling cyclical reviews, merging adjacent lessons, and scaling revision intervals as your memory solidifies.
1. The Lifecycle of a Lesson in Hifz Focus
Every verse you memorize travels through three structured stages:
[1. New Sabak] ──(Needs Work)──> [2. Practice Queue] │ │ (Mastered) (Mastered) │ │ ▼ ▼ [3. Dour Queue (Spaced Repetition System)] ◄─── Cyclic Reviews & Merging
- New Sabak: The fresh portion you are committing to memory for the first time.
- Practice Queue: If a student makes errors during Sabak recitation, the teacher marks it as "Needs More Practice". It enters the Practice Queue—top priority on the student's daily To-Do List—until recited fluently.
- Dour Queue: Once the teacher marks the lesson as "Sabak Memorized", it graduates into the long-term Dour queue with an automated initial review date.
2. Cyclic Spaced Repetition: Beating the Forgetting Curve
Memory retention follows the famous Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve: without structured review, newly memorized verses degrade rapidly within the first 72 hours.
Hifz Focus solves this mathematically:
- First Cycle: The lesson is scheduled for review within 2 to 4 days.
- Successful Recitation: When the student recites the Dour item to the teacher with zero or minimal errors, the app "recycles" the item:
- Its repetition count increments.
- Its next review interval doubles or triples (e.g., from 4 days to 10 days, then 24 days, then 60 days).
- Struggled Recitation: If the student makes errors, the interval shrinks back down, prioritizing the lesson for rapid re-testing.
This ensures you spend your revision time where it is needed most, rather than over-reviewing what is already solid while neglecting slipping surahs.
3. Intelligent Chunk Merging
In the early stages, a student might memorize in small increments:
- Day 1: Al-Baqarah (1–7)
- Day 2: Al-Baqarah (8–16)
- Day 3: Al-Baqarah (17–24)
If kept as isolated fragments, long-term revision would feel disjointed. Hifz Focus automatically recognizes adjacent verse ranges and merges them into cohesive reading blocks:
Al-Baqarah (1–7) + Al-Baqarah (8–16) + Al-Baqarah (17–24) ▼ Merged Dour Item: Al-Baqarah (1–24)
Configurable "Dour Chunk Size"
Teachers can adjust the Dour Chunk Size in the student's profile settings (from 150 words up to 1,000 words). This ensures merged chunks never exceed a student's daily capacity.
4. Student & Teacher Revision Workflow
| Role | Daily Dour Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Student | Open the To-Do List on your dashboard. Dour items due today appear with review tags. Practice them independently, use Self-Review, or record an audio submission. |
| Teacher | In a live session, select "Dour" from the Lesson Type dropdown. Choose the top item due for review. As the student recites, mark errors directly on the Mushaf. |
| System | Once marked "Memorized", the app recalculates the interval and automatically pushes the due date into the future. |
5. Maintenance: The "Clean Up Queue" Tool
If an institution imports historical records or lessons were entered out of order, the teacher can open the student's details page and click "Clean Up Queue".
This tool scans the complete session log ledger, recalculates global verse spans (GIDs), resolves overlaps, and outputs a clean, chronological revision schedule.
6. Summary: Why the Dour Queue Transforms Hifz
- No more guess-work: Teachers and students never have to ask, "What should we revise today?"
- Continuous coverage: Every single verse memorized remains in active circulation.
- Deeper retention: Verses transition permanently from short-term memory into lifetime memory.
(Urdu Translation)
(Spaced Repetition)
(Chunk Merging)
