When you complete a recitation session or check your dashboard in Hifz Focus, you will see your verses highlighted in different colors. The app classifies errors into two distinct categories: Jali (Major Errors in Red) and Khafi (Minor Errors in Yellow/Amber).

Understanding what these colors mean helps you prioritize your daily practice so you make the fastest possible progress.

1. Quick Comparison

FeatureLahn Jali (Major)Lahn Khafi (Minor)
Color in AppRed HighlightYellow / Amber Highlight
Meaning Affected?YES — Can change or reverse the meaning.NO — Meaning remains intact; rule broken.
Grammar Affected?YES — Changes grammatical cases (I'rab).NO — Relates to phonetic refinement.
UrgencyTop Priority: Lesson remains in Practice Queue.Targeted Practice: Refine via teacher audio notes.
Typical ExamplesChanging a vowel (Damma to Fatha), swapping letters (Seen for Saad), skipping words.Shortening a 6-count Madd, incorrect Ghunna duration, light pronunciation of a heavy letter.

2. Jali (جلي) — The Major Errors (Red)

Jali means "clear, obvious, manifest." These are mistakes that any trained listener—and often even non-Arabic speakers—can detect.

Why Jali Errors Are Critical

Because the Qur’an is the exact, unalterable word of Allah, changing a vowel or a letter can radically change the message:

  • Vowel Change (Harakah): In Surah Al-Fatihah, reciting “an‘amta” (You favored) as “an‘amtu” (I favored) alters who performed the action.
  • Letter Change (Letter): Saying “‘aleem” (All-Knowing) with an Alif makes it “aleem” (Painful).
  • Missed Doubling (Shaddah): In “Iyyaka na‘budu”, dropping the Shaddah on Yaa distorts the direct address to Allah.

How to Fix Jali Errors:

  1. Open your To-Do List and look at the lesson in your Practice Queue.
  2. Look at the Red-highlighted words in the Mushaf.
  3. Open your physical Mushaf or read the Arabic text slowly, sounding out each vowel (Harakaat) letter by letter.
  4. Recite the verse 10 times consecutively with complete accuracy before moving to the next verse.

3. Khafi (خفي) — The Minor Tajweed Errors (Yellow / Amber)

Khafi means "hidden, subtle." These mistakes violate specific phonetic Tajweed rules without altering the core semantic meaning of the verse.

Why Khafi Errors Matter

While Khafi errors do not invalidate your prayer, learning to recite with proper Tajweed is following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ:

  • Madd Timing: Elongating a vowel for only 2 counts when it requires 4 or 6 counts.
  • Nasalization (Ghunna): Rushing past a Noon Mushaddadah (نّ) or Meem Mushaddadah (مّ) without giving it the complete 2-beat nasal resonance.
  • Letter Attributes (Sifaat): Failing to give Qalqalah (an echoing bounce) to a quiet Qaf, Taa, Ba, Jeem, or Dal.
  • Heavy vs Light (Tafkheem / Tarqeeq): Pronouncing Raa or Laam with incorrect heaviness.

How to Fix Khafi Errors:

  1. Tap on the Yellow/Amber highlighted word on your dashboard.
  2. Read the teacher's category and note.
  3. Listen to the Teacher Voice Correction: If your teacher recorded an audio demonstration, tap the play button to hear the exact sound and tongue placement.
  4. Practice imitating the teacher's pronunciation 5 times until your tongue reproduces the exact acoustic tone.

4. How Your Error Counts Affect Your Dashboard

When your teacher completes your session, you receive an automated summary:

  • Status: Sabak Memorized:
    • Unlocked when there are zero Jali errors and acceptable Tajweed.
    • Automatically moves your lesson into the Dour Queue for long-term Spaced Repetition.
    • Zero errors total awards the Flawless Session badge!
  • Status: Needs More Practice:
    • Assigned when one or more Jali errors (or multiple unrefined Khafi errors) require another pass.
    • Keeps the lesson at the very top of your Practice Queue so you can conquer it in your next session.

Use your feedback not as criticism, but as a laser-guided roadmap to mastering the Book of Allah!

لحن جلی بمقابلہ لحن خفی: تلاوت کے فیڈ بیک کو سمجھیں (Urdu Translation)

(Yellow/Amber)
