A Teacher's Guide to Tajweed Errors in Hifz Focus
Tajweed is the art and science of reciting the Holy Qur’an correctly, preserving each letter's articulation points, essential characteristics, and grammatical rules. For both teachers and students using Hifz Focus, understanding how errors are categorized is key to making fast, measurable progress.
The app classifies mistakes into two core levels:
- Lahn Jali (Clear / Major Errors) — Marked in Red
- Lahn Khafi (Hidden / Minor Errors) — Marked in Yellow / Amber / Orange
This guide provides a reference for how mistakes are classified in Hifz Focus, why each category matters, and how to use the app's real-time error marking and audio notes to optimize practice time.
1. What Is Lahn?
In the terminology of Tajweed scholars, Lahn means an error or deviation from correct recitation. Tajweed scholars divide Lahn into two broad classes:
- Lahn Jali (اللحن الجلي): Clear, obvious mistakes that alter word structure or grammatical case, risking changes to the divine meaning. Correcting Jali errors is an individual obligation (Fard 'Ayn).
- Lahn Khafi (اللحن الخفي): Subtle, hidden mistakes that violate specific phonetic or decorative rules (e.g. elongation timing, nasalization, attributes). These affect the beauty, flow, and precision of recitation.
2. Lahn Jali — Major Errors (Red)
In Hifz Focus, Lahn Jali errors are high-priority flags highlighted in Red. These indicate mistakes that alter the Quranic text, word structure, or vowels.
Jali Error Categories in Hifz Focus
| Category | Description | Practical Example |
|---|---|---|
| Harakah | Mistake in vowel signs (Fatha, Damma, Kasra, Sukun). | Reciting “an‘amta” with a Damma (an‘amtu), which changes the meaning from "You bestowed favor" to "I bestowed favor." |
| Letter | Swapping one letter for another letter. | Saying “‘aleem” (عَلِيم - All-Knowing) with a Hamzah instead of ‘Ayn: “aleem” (أَلِيم - Painful). |
| Word Miss | Adding an extra word or omitting a word from the verse. | Skipping a word or introducing a word from another similar verse (Mutashabihat). |
| Shaddah | Missing or adding a letter doubling (Tashdeed). | Not stressing the Yaa in “Iyyaka” (إِيَّاكَ), turning it into a light single vowel. |
| Waqf | Pausing at a prohibited place that distorts sentence meaning. | Stopping in a way that breaks grammatical connectivity or negates meaning (e.g. stopping right after “La ilaha” without continuing). |
Critical Rule for Teachers: Always resolve all Jali errors before passing a student on a lesson. A lesson with even one unresolved Jali error should be marked as "Needs More Practice" so it remains in the student's Practice Queue for immediate follow-up.
3. Lahn Khafi — Minor Tajweed Errors (Yellow / Amber)
Lahn Khafi errors do not alter the meaning or grammar of the text, but they deviate from the rules of pronunciation and rhythm taught by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In Hifz Focus, these are marked with Yellow and Amber indicators.
Khafi Error Categories in Hifz Focus
| Category | Description | Practical Example |
|---|---|---|
| Makhraj | Incorrect point of articulation for a letter. | Producing the letter Dhad (ض) from the front teeth instead of the lateral edge of the tongue against the upper molars. |
| Sifaat | Missing or inaccurate letter attributes (Hams, Qalqalah, Istila’, Tafkheem). | Reciting a heavy letter like Qaf (ق) or Taa (ط) with a light sound, or omitting Qalqalah on a quiet Ba (بْ). |
| Rule | General Tajweed rule violations (Idgham, Ikhfa, Iqlab, Izhar). | Failing to hide the Noon Sakinah before an Ikhfa letter, or reciting an Izhar without clear separation. |
| Madd | Incorrect length or timing of vowel elongation. | Shortening a mandatory Madd Lazim (6 counts) down to 2 counts, or over-stretching a natural 2-count Madd Asli. |
| Ghunna | Incorrect duration or resonance of nasalization. | Cutting the nasalization short on a Noon Mushaddadah (نّ) or Meem Mushaddadah (مّ). |
| Waqf / Ibtida | Inaccurate stopping or starting rules. | Stopping at a sound boundary without properly repeating the preceding word when starting again. |

حفظ فوکس میں تجوید کی غلطیوں کی رہنما گائیڈ (Urdu Translation)
